What Actually Determines the Cost of a New Garage Door in the GTA

The most common question we get is what a new garage door costs, and the honest answer is that anyone who gives you a firm number before seeing your door is guessing. Two houses on the same street can differ substantially. Here is what actually drives the figure, so you can judge whether a quote you have been given is reasonable.

Size, and whether it is one door or two

A single door and a double door are different amounts of material, different spring specifications and different labour. Two singles side by side is a different job again from one double, even though the opening looks similar from the road. Non-standard heights — common on older GTA homes and on garages converted for taller vehicles — mean custom sizing rather than stock.

Material

Steel is the most common choice and spans a wide range itself, because gauge matters: a thicker-gauge steel door resists dents far better and costs accordingly. Wood and wood-composite carry a real premium and need refinishing to stay looking right. Aluminium and glass sit at the higher end and suit modern builds. Fibreglass and vinyl trade some appearance for very low maintenance.

Insulation

An uninsulated door is a single skin of steel. An insulated door sandwiches polystyrene or polyurethane between two skins, and is rated by R-value. This matters more in the GTA than people expect. If the garage is attached, shares a wall with a heated room, has a bedroom above it, or is used as a workshop or gym, insulation pays for itself in comfort and heating. It also makes the door significantly quieter and stiffer.

Windows and design detail

Window style is one of the larger swings in the whole quote. Plain panels, plain glass inserts, decorative inserts, frosted or obscured glass, and insulated glazing are all different costs. Carriage-house styling, decorative hardware and custom colour matching all move the number as well.

The condition of what is already there

This is the factor people forget, and it is why we ask for photos. A straightforward swap where the existing framing, tracks and opener are sound is one job. A door where the framing has rotted, the header is undersized, the tracks are bent, or the opening itself needs to be re-squared is a different one. Old spring systems sometimes need the whole assembly reconfigured rather than reused.

Hardware and the opener

Heavier doors need heavier springs and better rollers. Nylon rollers cost more than steel and are much quieter. If the opener is being replaced at the same time, drive type and features factor in. And springs are rated in cycles — a higher-cycle spring costs more up front and lasts markedly longer, which is usually the better buy for a door used several times a day.
