Garage Door Repair in Stouffville

2 min read

Stouffville has been one of the fastest-growing towns in York Region for twenty years. Most of its newer streets were built from the early 2000s onward, which means a very large number of garage doors in town were installed by builders within a few years of each other. They are now reaching the same point in their life at roughly the same time.

First spring failures

A builder-grade torsion spring is typically rated for around ten thousand cycles. A family that uses the garage as the front door can open and close it five or six times a day, which puts the first spring failure somewhere between six and twelve years in. That is exactly where much of Stouffville is now.

The sign is usually a loud bang from the garage, then a door the opener cannot lift, or one that lifts a few inches and stops. Do not keep trying the opener, and do not try to lift the door by hand. Read why spring repair is not a DIY job, then call. If one spring has gone on a two-spring door, we usually replace both, because the other one is the same age.

Open fields, wind and cold

Many Stouffville streets back onto farmland or open ground, and a garage door facing an open field takes a lot more wind than one in a sheltered city street. Wind-driven snow gets under worn bottom seals and past tired side weatherstripping. Thin uninsulated doors can also flex in strong gusts. If your garage is cold, drafty or collects snow inside the door in winter, new seals often fix most of it. If there is a room above the garage, an insulated door is usually worth it. We compare the options in insulated vs uninsulated doors.

Cold also exposes problems that were already there. A door that runs fine in summer and struggles in January usually has a spring that is near the end or lubrication that has stiffened. See garage doors in cold weather.

The older town and Ballantrae

Around Main Street and in the older parts of town there are older homes with detached garages, and out toward Ballantrae and Musselman Lake there are larger rural lots with oversized garages, workshops and outbuildings. Those often need larger or custom-sized doors, and we handle those too.
