Garage Door Won't Open in Cold Weather? Here's Why

Every winter in the GTA produces a run of the same calls, usually on the first properly cold morning. Cold weather rarely breaks a garage door on its own. What it does is expose every component that was already marginal, all at once. Knowing which is which saves you a call-out, and more importantly stops you from forcing a door and turning a small problem into an expensive one.
The door is frozen to the ground
This is the most common cause by a wide margin, and the most misdiagnosed. Meltwater runs off the car, pools under the bottom seal, and freezes overnight. The rubber bonds to the concrete. In the morning the opener strains against a door that is effectively glued down, decides it has hit an obstruction, and stops.
Do not hold the wall button down to force it. That is how you tear the bottom seal off, bend the bottom panel, or snap a cable. Break the ice bond first — warm water along the seal, or careful work with a plastic scraper. Never an open flame, and never a metal blade against the rubber.
The grease has thickened
Lubricant that is fine at 20°C can turn to paste at minus 20. Rollers stop rolling and start dragging, hinges stiffen, and the opener suddenly has to overcome resistance that was not there in November. The symptom is a door that moves but is slow, loud and laboured.
This is why lubricant type matters. Standard grease and, worse, WD-40 used as a lubricant are poor choices for a GTA winter. A proper garage door lubricant stays workable in the cold. This is a ten-minute autumn job that prevents a January call-out.
Metal has contracted
Steel shrinks as it cools. Tracks tighten fractionally around rollers, and tolerances that were comfortable become snug. On a door that was already slightly out of alignment, that margin is what disappears first. Nothing is broken — but the door binds, and the opener reads binding as an obstruction.
Springs fail in the cold, but the cold did not cause it
A disproportionate number of springs break on cold mornings, and it is easy to blame the weather. In reality the spring was near the end of its cycle life and the cold provided the last bit of stress. Cold steel is more brittle and the door is heavier to move, so a spring with very little left in it gives up then rather than in July.
If you heard a bang, the door is extremely heavy by hand, or there is a visible gap in the coil, stop. That is a broken spring and it is not a cold-weather quirk to work around.
The safety sensors are affected too
Condensation and frost on a sensor lens breaks the beam the same way an object would, and the door refuses to close. Low winter sun sitting directly in a lens does the same. Wipe both lenses and check that both indicator lights are solid.
What to do before winter
Lubricate springs, rollers, hinges and bearings with a proper cold-rated garage door lubricant.
Check the bottom seal for cracks and replace it if it has gone hard.
Keep the area under the door clear of standing water and packed snow.
Test the balance: disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand to halfway. It should hold there.
Have the springs looked at if the door is more than a few years past its last service.
If it is already stuck
Do not force it with the opener, and do not repeatedly press the button. If the door will not move freely by hand with the opener disconnected, something mechanical is wrong and running the motor against it will damage the opener, the cables or the door.
