Emergency Garage Door Repair: What Counts and What to Do First

We answer the phone 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and a fair number of those calls come in outside business hours. Some garage door problems genuinely cannot wait. Others can, and knowing which is which saves you money and stops you turning a small fault into a large one.

These are real emergencies

• The door is stuck open and cannot be closed. Your garage — and usually the door into the house — is standing open.

• The door is stuck closed with a vehicle inside that you need.

• A broken spring or cable, especially on a door that is partly open. The load is unstable.

• The door has come off its track or is hanging crooked. It can fall.

• Damage from a vehicle impact that has bent the tracks or the frame.

• A door that is falling faster than it should when closing, which points to a cable or spring failure.

These can usually wait

A noisy door, a remote that has stopped working while the wall button still does, a torn weather seal, cosmetic dents, or a door that is simply slow — none of these are urgent. They are worth fixing, but they will keep until a scheduled visit, and paying an after-hours rate for them is money wasted.

If the door is stuck open

The security problem is the immediate one. If the opener will not close it, find the emergency release cord — the red handle hanging from the trolley — and pull it to disconnect the door from the opener. You can then usually lower the door by hand.

Do this carefully. If the springs are broken, the door has no counterbalance and its full weight will come down. Do not stand under it, keep children and pets clear, and if it feels heavy or wants to drop, stop and leave it. A door left open overnight is a smaller problem than a door that falls on someone.

Once it is down, make sure the interior door between the garage and the house is locked, which is the entry point that actually matters.

If the door is stuck closed and you need the car

Same release cord, same caution. If the door will not lift by hand with the opener disconnected, something mechanical is wrong and forcing it will damage the door, the cables or you. That is the point to call rather than push harder.

What not to do

• Do not hold the opener button down to force a door that is resisting. That is how cables snap and panels bend.

• Do not try to release, adjust or remove a spring under tension. This is the single most dangerous part of a garage door.

• Do not run the opener repeatedly after it has reversed twice. It is telling you something is in the way.

• Do not prop a partly open door with anything other than proper support.

Preventing the emergency

Most after-hours calls are predictable failures that gave warning. Springs are rated in cycles and wear out on a schedule; cables fray visibly before they snap; rollers get loud before they seize. Cold weather is the other big trigger, and most winter failures are avoidable with autumn maintenance.
